Serve Tour - Baltimore, MD

FR-2| Edgemere Bldg. Restoration (Fri+Sat)

4/29/2022 — 4/30/2022

In partnership with churches, associations, your state convention, and SEND Relief, the Serve Tour seeks to inspire you to engage in compassion ministry through participation in ministry projects in Baltimore. Our plan is to find ways to meet needs and bless churches, schools, local governments and compassion ministry non-profits. We want to strategically help local revitalized churches and bless bi-vocational pastors by providing assistance.

We want to make it easy to bring people together in Jesus’ name to make a difference.

Our goal is for the Serve Tour to become a unifying opportunity for Southern Baptists to demonstrate to a watching city who we are and (more importantly) who our Savior is. As believers swarm the city, we will provide pre-trip training guides and a 30-day prayer guide to help you take your next step on mission.

What will you do?

You will begin each day of serve tour at the FREEDOM CHURCH hub. The address is 5310 Hazelwood Ave Baltimore, MD 21206. Your project leader will give you instructions each morning of Serve Tour.

Edgemere (also known as Sparrow's Point) is a small peninsula that has a small-town feel with urban dynamics. There are about 9000 people, including a large community of people who work industrial blue-collar jobs, as well as a small up-and-coming waterfront community. About 7 years ago, Edgemere Baptist Church, a once-thriving church, had unfortunately dwindled down to about 10-15 members, and they could no longer afford the upkeep of their building. They closed down their building space and started to rent out a small studio. In November 2020, Edgemere Baptist Church merged with Church of the Harbor, a thriving church plant about 15 minutes away. In December 2021, Pastor Tyler Silvey led a team out of Church of the Harbor to start a new church called Church of the Harbor - Edgemere, and they have started to use the once-vacant Edgemere Baptist Church building once more.

Gospel activity has returned to Edgemere! Church of the Harbor - Edgemere now has a restored worship space with a new heating system, and the church holds Sunday morning gatherings, weekly family meals after every Sunday gathering, and Monday night community groups. They also have small outreach events every week and large outreach events every month.

However, there is still much work to be done. It has been 20-30 years since the exterior of the building as last painted, and some of the exterior doors are nonfunctional. During this project, volunteers will do three things: (1) give the exterior a fresh coat of paint, (2) install an aluminum awning over an entryway, and (3) install new exterior doors around the building. (4) install some new windows as well. Not only will these projects help Church of the Harbor - Edgemere to satisfy their insurance requirements, but it will enable them to have a more welcoming space for the community.
